Proposition for Villette

Exhibited in May 2014 in the Foyer Space of c3 contemporary art spaces, Abbotsford Convent, Melbourne.

Proposition for Villette is an on-going series responding to my viewing a coincidental passing of a barge transporting stones in the canal of Parc de la Villette, in Paris. This event proposed the realisation of garden never constructed on the site. This unrealised garden, Choral Work, was designed by Peter Eisenman and Jacques Derrida between 1985 and 1987, upon invitation of the park’s designer Bernard Tschumi. The prescription given to them was that only water and stone should be used, and no vegetation. The garden itself was never realised, the only evidence of it is contained within a book titled Chora L Works, published as a document of the collaboration. The work converses between that potential garden concept and the documentation of the passing barge of stones that recalled it.
